health benefit of herbs

Herbs always have their place in the kitchen, their unique aromas enhancing any cuisine.  But more than just making your dishes delicious, adding herbs to your diet is also beneficial for your health. Herbs contains potent substances that gives them their specific taste and health benefits.

Rosemary

One of the most powerful herbs yet one of the most versatile. Rosemary infused oil prevents it from going rancid and protects it from oxidation. Because it helps with the regulation of glutathione, rosemary helps the body to detox naturally.  It also prevents the formation of carcinogenic amines in meat cooked over high heat.  Rosemary is also very rich in antioxidants.

Thyme

Thyme shows a great antioxidant power and helps fight bacterial infections. Like other herbs entering the famous “bouquet garni”, thyme makes a delicious addition to mustard-based dressings.

Sage

A little goes a long way. More than just being rich in antioxidant, sage helps to lower bad cholesterol.  This special herb can help to regulate menopause symptoms as well.  Sage extract also has been shown to improve memory and attention.

Mint

Mint is the champion for digestive problems. It has been shown to help people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive issues.  It also may have a positive effect on symptoms of polycystic ovarian syndrome. Its refreshing taste gives it the possibility to pair well with both sweet and savory dishes.

Basil

The pesto champion! With its distinctive flavor, it makes spectacular association with classic Italian cuisine and tomato-based dishes. Basil also gives a special touch to many Thai food dishes. Basil reduces high blood pressure and helps with diabetes. As other herbs, basil is also rich in antioxidants.

Oregano

Interestingly, oregano is one of the few herbs that give a stronger taste when dried, and the same goes for its antioxidant powers. Oregano oil contains broad-spectrum antibacterial agent. This makes oregano an excellent ally to fight infections.  Try to take a few drops of oregano oil at the first signs of a cold, and you might avoid it.

I love putting herbs into everything I make to add some color and more flavor. In fact, I love to put some mint into a cup of tea I brew in my single cup coffee  maker to give it a little bite.
