What is glutathione?
Glutathione is a tripeptide, an antioxidant that protects against free radicals. While all cells in the human body are capable of synthesizing glutathione, liver glutathione synthesis has been shown to be essential.
There’re two major glutathione groups. One that is contained in many fruits and vegetables (GPx), and one that is created only within the body (GSH). Plant-based glutathione is also an antioxidant, but somewhat less potent than GSH. It’s still important, however, to consume food that contains GPx, as it not only contains many beneficial antioxidants, but it also helps you produce the other kind of glutathione, the GSH.
What it does for your health
Glutathione, like other antioxidants, prevent oxidative stress by inactivating free radicals. However, glutathione also works in collaboration with other antioxidants like vitamin E and vitamin C, by keeping them in their active form.
Through conjugation, glutathione naturally detoxifies from carcinogens and foreign substances. It improves your immune system, and plays a role in DNA repair, protein synthesis and amino acid transportation. Glutathione is also essential to the nervous system, the gastrointestinal system and the lungs.
Glutathione is also known for it’s anti-ageing capacities. Since glutathione production wanes with age, it’s even more important to increase our glutathione rich food consumption, as we get older.

Besides the best plant-based food source, there are also some substances that help restoring intracellular glutathione. Milk Thistle extract, Alpha Lipoic Acid and unpasteurized whey protein are part of them.
